17 injured over appointing mosque Imam in Kushtia

At least 17 people were injured in a clash between two groups of Muslim worshipers at the Manik kat Uttarpara Jame Mosque in Kushtia’s Khoksa Upazila over appointing Imam of the mosque today (29 May).

Among them, seriously injured Abdur Razzak has been referred to Kushtia General Hospital.

Police have been deployed in the area.

Local people and police said the cahos erupted when worshipers split into two groups over the appointment of  imam during Friday prayers. Leaving the prayers, the two groups jumped on each other with native weapons. The 10 members of Akbar Ali group and 6 members of Chand Ali group were injured.

Among the injured, Shahid Ali (35), Rahman Hossain (50), Billal (35), Malek (30), Masood (28), Tariq (24), Latif (45), Shariful (40), Ebadat Ali (25), Razzak (35) and Rafiqul were admitted to the hospital. (40) Lutfar Rahman (55) Kalam (45) Salam (40) Rabbani (25) and Rezaul (38) were admitted to Khoksa upazila health complex.

Meanwhile, additional police have been deployed at the hospital and the village.

Police claim that law and order is under their control. Neither side has lodged a complaint with the police till the writing of this report.

However, OC Zahurul Alam said eight people were arrested from the spot.
