Banana boon cash for cultivators in Southwestern region

The banana farmers in 10 south western districts in Khulna division have been getting into its cultivation as the fruit is bringing them financial reward than previous periods.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources said total 9,978 hectares of land has brought under banana cultivation in 10 districts this year. At the same time, the DAE has set the target to produce 15,873 tonnes of banana.

The farming was 8912 hectares in 2019 and 7913 hectares in 2018.

The district includes Kushtia, Meherpur, Jashore, Khulna, Magura, Narail, Jhenidah, Chuadanga, Satkhira and Bagerhat.

 

The DAE offices said banana farming is seeing as more profitable than other crops.

 

They said it is also cost savior cultivation than other crops like paddy, jute or sugarcane.

Besides, farmers usually can sell bananas at the fields and its market price hardly decreases. On the other hand, cultivation of other crops beside the banana without many hazards is also making the farmers keen on banana farming.

 

A DAE official in Kushtia said cultivation of pointed gourd beside banana has become very popular in the region in recent days. Farmers are making double cash by this integrating farming.

 

Though the farmers usually produce this fruit round the year, but key season will began in March-April.

 

Farmer Shahed Ali of Bhatoi area in Jhenidah district said he cultivated Banana on his 3 acres of land this year.

According to this farmer, to plant 250 to 300 banana trees on a bigha of land, a farmer is to cost Tk 20,000 to Tk 25,000. The farmer can make profit of around Tk 1, 00,000 from it. Of them, 300 to 320 plants may give fruits.

A banana farmer can also earn money by selling by-plants grows from the root of main plants, he added.

 

Farmers in the region mainly plant few kinds of Sabri varieties and Sagar varieties of banana. Madna, Chapa, Anupam are other popular brand of banana in the region the farmers produces.

 

Bahar Uddin of Madhupur in Kushtia sadar upazila said he planted banana on two bighas of land (66 decimals) this season expending around Tk 48,000.

 

“I am hopeful that I am going to get a profit of Tk 80,000 to Tk 90,000 from my cultivation,” he said also adding “He has no transport cost as Madhupur Banana market in Kushtia, one of the largest banana selling center in Khulna division is near to my home.”

 

“Farmers in the area are choosing to shift in banana cultivation as they receiving good output,” when talked, Additional Director of DAE in Jashore region Mohammad Ali said.

 

This official said a number of commercially motivated farmers are engaged in banana farming in the region.
