Three Meherpur journalists faces case under DS Act

Three journalists of Meherpur district, including the editor and the publisher of a local newspaper have been sued under the Digital Security Act for publishing a report on alleged illegal occupying a building by a former lawmaker.

The case is now pending in Meherpur chief judicial magistrate court.

The journalists are publisher of daily Meherpur Protidin Emon Ahmed, editor of the newspaper Yadul Momin and joint editor Al Amin.

Sabuj Hossain, nephew of former independent Lawmaker of Meherpur-2 (Gangni) also former district Awami League president Maqbool Hossain, filed the case with Gangni police station on May 13.

Officer in charge (OC) of Gangni police station Obaidur Rahman said the case was filed under the Digital Security Act-2018.After the case, police swiftly investigated the case and submitted report to the Chief judicial magistrate court in Meherpur on next day.  The daily published a report on May 11. The report mentioned that Maqbool rented a house in Meherpur city about 26 years ago and had been refusing to leave it despite repeated calls from the owner of the house. The building was declared abandoned by the Meherepur municipality several times within a couple of years.

The case claimed the newspaper report as false and fabricated report.

The case also claimed that the news publishers shared it on various digital platforms to damage the reputation of Maqbool, who is also a former president of the district Awami League.

Meanwhile, journalists in Meherpur protested the case. They held several protest rallies and meeting in the district demanding immediate withdraw the case. They also held a human chain programme. The protest is on continue.
