Follow-up/One died in Khoksa clash over recruiting mosque Imam

One succumbed to injuries from clash between two groups in Khoksa on Friday over the Imam recruitment.

The deceased was identified as Abdur Razzak, 35. He died at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Saturday afternoon. He is the son of Lutfar Rahman of Manikat village and a carpenter by profession. The news was confirmed by the deceased’s grandfather Ayub Ali.

Two groups of Muslim people engaged in a clash over the appointing Imam at Jami Masjid in Manikat Madhyapara of Shimulia Union of the upazila. The attack and counter-attack, which started from the mosque, later spread to the village leaving 17 people from both sides injured.

The injured were admitted to Khoksa Upazila Health Complex. Abdur Razzak was sifted to Kushtia General Hospital and latter to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

Two separate cases were filed at Khoksa police station on Friday night. Police arrested six people of both groups. The court on Saturday sent them jail.

The deceased grandfather Ayub Ali alleged that with the support of some leaders of the Upazila Awami League, their opponents were trying to establish supremacy in two mosques in Madhyapara and Uttar Para villages. Ayub Ali’s two sons were imams in the mosques. The opponent has been trying to oust his sons for a long time.

Local Awami League leader and chairman of Shimulia union Parishad Abdul Majid the issue of establishment supremacy over mosques is not the main issue here.
