The Satkhira district administration has announced the official mango harvesting schedule, with mangoes set to arrive in markets starting May 5.
The schedule was unveiled by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mostaq Ahmed during a views-exchange meeting titled “Safe Mango Marketing” held at the DC’s conference room. The event was attended by mango growers, traders, agricultural officers, and officials from various levels of the administration.
According to the schedule, local mango varieties such as Gobindobhog, Gopalbhog, Bombay, Golapkhas, and Deshi Boishakhi can be harvested and marketed starting May 5.
Besides, Himsagar will be allowed from May 20, Langra from May 27, and Amrapali from June 5.
Saiful Islam, Deputy Director of the Satkhira Department of Agricultural Extension, stated that the district has approximately 5,000 mango orchards spanning 4,135 hectares. This year’s production target has been set at 62,800 metric tons, a significant increase from last year’s 50,000 tonnes.
When talked, Deputy Commissioner Mostaq Ahmed told Daily Sun that the district’s mango harvesting and distribution system has been reorganized for several reasons.
He highlighted that Satkhira’s mango varieties—Gobindobhog, Gopalbhog, Himsagar, Langra, and Amrapali—are highly sought after both at home and abroad.
“Thanks to the region’s favorable climate and soil, our mangoes ripen earlier than those from other areas and have a distinct, superior flavour. Their early market entry also allows them to command higher prices,” he said.
“To preserve the reputation of our mangoes and ensure that only pure and safe produce reaches consumers, we have introduced this harvest schedule,” he added.
He also warned that harvesting, storing, or marketing unripe mangoes before the designated dates will not be permitted. The district administration, along with law enforcement and agricultural officials, will enforce strict monitoring.
The Deputy Commissioner further noted that Satkhira aims to export around 70 metric tons of mangoes this year. Since 2015, the district has been exporting mangoes to Europe, opening up promising new economic prospects for the region.
