Bangladesh has exported 252 tonnes of potatoes to Nepal through Banglabandha land port in Panchagarh, a key trading hub connecting three countries— Nepal, India and Bhutan.
The shipment, consisting of 12 trucks loaded with potatoes, departed for Nepal on March 27, the final working day before the Eid holidays.
Ujjal Hossain, Quarantine Inspector at the Plant Quarantine Centre of Banglabandha Land Port, confirmed the export.
Earlier, on March 25, another 231 tonnes of potatoes were sent to Nepal via the port.
Since January 2024, Bangladesh has exported a total of 2,331 tonnes of potatoes to Nepal through Banglabandha in diifferent phases.
According to officials, seven Bangladeshi exporters are involved in the trade, sourcing potatoes from Dinajpur, Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, and Nilphamari districts.
The potatoes undergo laboratory testing before receiving a phytosanitary certificate, ensuring quality compliance for export.
The shipment primarily consists of Sterij and Lady Rosetta potato varieties, known for their high demand in Nepal.
More Exports Lined Up After Eid
Due to the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, operations at Banglabandha land port will remain suspended until April 6.
Officials have hoped that several hundred more tonnes of potatoes are expected to be shipped to Nepal after activities resume.
